Manufacturing
Halkirk and the surrounding region has a robust and vibrant manufacturing sector for equipment for the oil and gas industry, agricultural equipment, and specialized equipment for the heavy oil industry, etc. The Village and surrounding area boast a number of highly qualified and innovative welders undertaking custom steel fabrication and manufacturing.
Agriculture
The Halkirk area is one of the most productive agricultural regions in Canada. The most common crops in the region are wheat, barley and canola. Beef, dairy, hog, poultry and egg production are also important regionally. In addition, the region has recently seen an increase in alternative farming including the raising of bison, elk and honey bees and an increase in regional greenhouse operations.
Coal Mining
CFB Wainwright, 30 km away, is one of the busiest Army bases in Canada. It is home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, and the preferred training ground for the Army’s field units based in Edmonton. The military population averages between 500 and 1,000 members and the operations of the base provide many opportunities to serve the base’s procurement needs.
Transportation
Located at the junction of Highways 12 and 855, Halkirk is within easy commuting distance to theTowns of Castor (20 km) and Settler (40 km). Halkirk is in close proximity to the High Load Corridor (Highway 36). The Castor Airport is the local airstrip with the nearest commercial and freight services offered at Calgary or Edmonton International Airports.
