The County of Paintearth is a progressive rural municipality in East Central Alberta. We are proud to boast a strong working relationship with the energy sector. The County boasts an 83 unit wind farm, intense natural resource drilling programs, is home to the Battle River Coal Generating Station, and recently completed construction of an Eastern Alberta Transmission Line. In addition, Highway 36 (High Load Corridor) is located in the middle of the County. The Paintearth region is a progressive municipality with many opportunities. The County of Paintearth No. 18 works closely with our neighboring municipalities, which are the Towns of Coronation and Castor, and the Village of Halkirk. The municipalities of the Paintearth region have successfully initiated partnerships such as the Paintearth Economic Partnership Society, Paintearth Regional Waste Ltd., broadband internet service, regional ambulance service, regional water services, and other accomplishments.

Oil and Gas
The County is located in proximity to both Calgary and Edmonton, the fourth and fifth largest metropolitan areas in Canada, and is also near the South Athabasca Oil Sands with a projected production of over 3.4M barrels of oil per day. Drilling, seismic, and pipeline construction contribute significantly to our economy and numerous opportunities exist for up-stream oil service companies to locate here.
Agriculture in the region is a major economic sector with diversity ranging from grain and specialty crops to domestic and specialty livestock. Producers mainly grow grains such as wheat, oats, barley and canola. Livestock is also a vital part of the industry, with increased activity in the rearing of hogs in ultra-modern facilities, and improved pastures to support larger herds of dairy and beef cattle.
With high winds, ready access to transmission lines and hundreds of hectares of farmland for development, Paintearth County is in a geographic area that is very well suited to the wind energy sector. The Paintearth Mine, a 6,226 hectare coal mine located near Forestburg, provides employment and creates numerous opportunities in transportation, manufacturing and other support services for the industry.
The County is serviced by an excellent highway network consisting of Highway 12 providing east and west connecting Saskatchewan to Red Deer, Alberta. Highway 36 is currently designated a high/wide-load corridor to facilitate oversize loads throughout Alberta, and a key northern arm of the Ports-to-Plains Alliance network connecting Canada, USA & Mexico. Our region is serviced by 2 community airports in Castor and Coronation, providing 4000 ft. runways to accommodate small aircraft. Edmonton International Airport is the closest major airport, approximately 2 hours away, with the Calgary International Airport less than 3 hours away from the center of the region.
